WP1 – Photosensitization (PHOTO)

WP1 is focused on evaluate suitability of PHOTO as antimicrobial tool for the surface of ready-to-eat meals, raw material and packaging.

It will begin with the study on lab-scale level using biophotonic technologies constructed from devices used before for the inactivation of harmful and pathogenic microorganisms in blood products and will continue with the development of a non-expensive, portable, easy to use and maintain device of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for photosensitization, suitable for the ready-to-eat vegetable and fruit salads.

A specific task focused on the study and identification of packaging materials suitable to photosensitization technology will be also developed. Moreover, different polymeric packaging matrixes per type of food will be selected in order to assess the effects of the novel sanitization technology.

The data obtained will be modelled in WP 6 and used for the risk assessment analysis.
